Permanent Residence (PR) for the Republic of South Africa can be obtained in various categories, either simultaneous with the TRP or, depending on the category and the circumstances of the applicant, a few years later.

A permanent residence permit offers maximum flexibility with regard to arrival and departures to South Africa as well as with regards to any activities planned for in the Republic. A permanent residence holder has all the rights, privileges, duties and obligations of a citizen (except those which a law or Constitution explicitly ascribes to a citizen e.g. voting).

In certain categories the permit may be issued with reasonable individual terms and conditions i.t.o. the Immigration Act, which may apply for 2 – 5 years max. The original citizenship of the applicant is not affected. A South African Identification Book will, upon application, be issued to the PR Holder, endorsed as “non-citizen”.

A Permanent Residence status can only be withdrawn by the Department of Home Affairs should a PR holder have been absent from SA for more than three years or is convicted of a criminal offence.
